Rugby

The Rugby Club continues to go from strength to strength each year, with increasing student participation, excellent coaching opportunities, and strong performances on the pitch. Rugby provides students with many valuable benefits, helping to build teamwork, discipline, resilience, fitness, and leadership skills, while also promoting school spirit and friendship across year groups.

The school is proud to field three rugby teams, U14, Junior, and Senior - giving students of all abilities the opportunity to get involved and develop their skills in a positive and encouraging environment. A particularly valuable aspect of the club is its strong links with Sligo Rugby Club, which allows students to form connections within the wider rugby community while benefiting from the guidance of high-quality coaches and experienced players.

This year marked a truly historic achievement for the club, with the school proudly represented in the Connacht U14 Final — making history as the first ever girls’ school in Sligo to reach a Connacht rugby final at this age grade. A testament to the dedication, commitment, and hard work of both players and coaches throughout the season.

At the end of each year, the club also presents the “Spirit of Rugby” Award. This award recognises a student who not only shows great improvement in their rugby ability, but who also demonstrates commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, encouragement towards others, and a positive attitude both on and off the pitch. It reflects the values at the heart of Mercy Rugby Club and celebrates the important role rugby plays in developing character as well as sporting skill.

The future of rugby in the school is extremely bright, and the club looks forward to building on this success in the years ahead.
