Leaving Certificate Applied Programme

The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) Programme in Mercy College is a well-established and highly valued programme that has been successfully supporting students for over 20 years. LCA offers a practical, student-centered approach to education, designed to recognise the talents, strengths and potential of every learner. The programme provides students with opportunities to achieve success through active learning experiences, continuous assessment, and real-life skills development.

Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)

The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is an alternative to the traditional Leaving Certificate, designed for students who prefer a more practical and hands-on learning experience.

The two-year programme consists of four half-year blocks called sessions. Achievement is credited in each session. Courses are offered in three main areas: Vocational Preparation; General Education; and Vocational Education.

Continuous Assessment
Continuous Assessment

Unlike the traditional Leaving Certificate, which is primarily exam-based, LCA assesses students throughout the two-year program. This includes key assignments, tasks, interviews, and written assignments. The focus on continuous assessment provides a broader view of the students' abilities.

There is also a final examination in each of the following areas:

• English and Communication

• Two vocational specialisms (Hotel, Catering and Tourism & Hair and Beauty/ Office Administration and Customer Care)

• Mathematical Applications

• Language (Irish and French/ Spanish)

Work Experience
Work Experience

A core element of LCA is work experience, which is typically done one day per week throughout the program. This gives students valuable insights into the working world.

Qualification and Progression
Qualification and Progression

Upon completion, students receive the Leaving Certificate Applied qualification, which is different from the traditional Leaving Certificate. While LCA does not provide direct access to most university courses, it allows progression to further education through Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses, apprenticeships, or training programs, with pathways to higher education available through alternative routes.

Mercy College offers the following LCA subjects to students:  Mathematical Application, English & Communication, Social Education, Leisure & Recreation, Religion, Childcare, Vocational Preparation and Guidance, Hair and Beauty, Hotel Catering and Tourism, Office Administration and Customer Care, Art, Information Technology, Irish and French.
