Career Guidance
Our Guidance Department supports students in making informed decisions about subject choice, further study, training, and future careers. We also support students with personal, educational, and career-related guidance throughout their time in Mercy College.
The Guidance Counsellor works with students across all year groups and provides support in areas such as:
- Subject choice.
- Transition from Junior Cycle to Senior Cycle.
- Transition Year planning.
- CAO and college applications.
- Apprenticeships, PLCs, and other further education options.
- CVs, interviews, and work experience preparation.
- Personal, educational, and career development.
Students may meet the Guidance Counsellor individually, and parents/guardians may also contact the school to discuss guidance matters.

Some of the supports provided to our year groups are mentioned below
Junior Cycle
Students receive guidance on subject selection, self-awareness, study planning, and the move into Senior Cycle. This is a good time to begin exploring interests, strengths, and possible future pathways.
Transition Year
Students can use TY to explore careers, research courses, complete work experience, and begin to identify interests and possible post-school pathways.
Fifth Year
Students are encouraged to research college courses, entry requirements, apprenticeships, and alternative routes after Leaving Certificate. Guest speakers from a variety of pathways will visit throughout the year.
Sixth Year
Students receive support with CAO applications, alternative progression routes, interviews, decision-making, and deadline planning. Guidance at this stage usually includes individual appointments and regular reminders about key dates, including guest speakers.
