Chess Club

The Chess Club in Mercy College Sligo meets once a week during lunchtime and is open to all students, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player. The club provides a friendly, relaxed environment where students can learn the rules of the game, develop strategies, and enjoy friendly matches with classmates. More experienced players are encouraged to challenge
themselves and help others improve, making the club a welcoming and supportive space for everyone.

The focus is on having fun, building confidence, and enjoying the challenge of chess together.

In addition to our weekly meetings, the Chess Club also takes part in local chess tournaments throughout the year. These events give students the opportunity to represent the school, test their skills against players from other schools, and gain valuable competitive experience in a supportive
setting. Participation in tournaments is encouraged but always optional, focusing on enjoyment, teamwork, and personal improvement.
