Mercy College Sligo has long been recognised as a powerhouse of school basketball in Ireland, with a rich and proud tradition that stretches back decades. The school first established its reputation on the national and international stage during the 1970s, when Mercy College teams enjoyed remarkable success, securing numerous European titles. These achievements not only highlighted the talent and dedication within the school but also placed Mercy College firmly on the map as one of the leading schools of basketball excellence.
Since those early years, basketball in Mercy College has continued to evolve and thrive. While the game itself has developed with time, the core values of commitment, teamwork, and competitive spirit have remained constant. In recent years, the school has continued its success, achieving impressive results in All-Ireland competitions across multiple age groups. In recent years the school has achieved four All-Ireland Titles and were participants in numerous All – Ireland semi-finals.
Mercy College takes great pride in its strong and vibrant basketball structure. The school competes at a high level across two league grades at 1st Year, 2nd Year, Under-16 and Under-19 levels, ensuring that players are both supported and challenged throughout their development. In addition to league competitions, our teams participate in the prestigious Schools Cup at both U16 and U19 levels. This depth of participation not only enhances skill development but also fosters a strong sense of community and school spirit.
Basketball remains a central part of life in Mercy College Sligo, linking past achievements with present success and future ambition. The legacy of excellence established in the 1970s continues to inspire current students, and the school is immensely proud of its ongoing contribution to the sport at both national and international levels. This commitment to excellence was recognised nationally last year when Mercy College was honoured with the Girls School of the Year award by Basketball Ireland at their annual awards ceremony.
