School Mural
As part of a Creative Engagement project, Mercy College, Sligo welcomed past pupil & artist Marian Noone (www.thisisfriz.com). Marian is the lady responsible for many of Sligo’s most famous murals. Our 5th year Art students worked alongside Marian to produce the two-part mural at the entrance to the school.
The striking mural pays tribute to Catherine McAuley, the visionary founder of the Sisters of Mercy, whose life was devoted to service, compassion, and education. Rendered in grayscale, her serene portrait stands in contrast to the vibrant backdrop, symbolizing her enduring presence amidst a world she helped transform.
Behind her, a red door with an arched window evokes the welcoming spirit of the House of Mercy, the original home for women and children in need. On her left, a steaming cup of tea reflects her well-known gesture of hospitality—Catherine famously asked for a cup of tea on her deathbed, a symbol of comfort and community. Below it, a red rose blooms, representing the love and compassion that defined her mission.
On the right, a lantern glows, signifying the light of guidance and the enlightenment she brought to those she served. Above it, a heart radiates charity, the core of her life's work. The mural’s background—a mosaic of blue and purple bricks—adds depth and texture, suggesting the many lives touched by her legacy.
Greeting students, staff, and visitors at the front entrance of Mercy College, Sligo is a vibrant mural that beautifully captures the spirit of our community. At its heart are five interlocked hands of different skin tones, forming a pentagon—a powerful symbol of unity, diversity, and mutual support.
Surrounding this central image are icons that reflect the core values and educational pillars of our school. A book stands for knowledge and lifelong learning, while a running figure promotes health and physical education. The musical note and paint palette celebrate the arts and creativity, and the atom and pi symbol highlight our commitment to science and mathematics.
A heart reminds us of the compassion and kindness we strive to show one another, and a speech bubble emphasizes the importance of communication and respectful dialogue. Finally, a steaming cup of tea or coffee offers a warm symbol of hospitality and welcome.
Set against a backdrop of calming blue bricks, each icon is framed in lighter blue, drawing attention to the many ways our school nurtures the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. This mural is more than decoration; it’s a daily reminder of the inclusive, dynamic, and caring environment we are proud to be part of.
